The Local Town
The nearby town is called Jiu Jiang, ( 九 江 ) or Gao Gong in the local language which is Cantonese. It is typical of many rural towns in Guangdong Province, with an appealing laid-back charm which shields it from the hustle of city life.

You are likely to be the only foreigners in the town, and as such will attract the attention of the local people. They will not pressure you, but perhaps stop to wonder why you are there. However, if you appear in trouble you will soon be assisted by people eager to assist you, most younger residents speaking a high degree of English.

The town is strung out along the banks of a main canal that is being completely refurbished and due for completion in summer 2011. The town centre is a cacophony of human endeavour, where several supermarkets vie for trade and the local inter-city buses have their terminus.
Local Amenities
  • ATM - There is one ATM machine that accepts international credit cards. This is located at the Main branch of the Bank of China just west of the town centre. The machine is topped up with cash once daily (except Sundays) at around 1pm.
  • There are several supermarkets scattered around the town centre, the best one being ParknShop set back slightly from the main crossroads and bridge.
  • Mona Lisa is the only dedicated western restaurant which offers decent western food, coffee and drinks at reasonable prices. This restaurant is open all day until late, and is divided into three sections, western nearest the door, Japanese further inside, and Chinese hotpot further inside. Tel: 13695241521 or landline: 0757 8651 6902.
  • Police Station - there are several police stations in the town, the main one being slightly west if the Bank of China and set within a compound that used to belong to our families Great Grandfather.
  • Hospital - There is a large hospital which is efficient and well run. Many of the staff speak English, including most of the Doctors. I have used this hospital myself and was offered great service. Our child's birth was actually registered there! It is located towards the end of the main street to the west of the town centre, minutes from Mona Lisa restaurant.
  • Travel Agency - Nanhai CTS Qiaolian ticket office is the main travel agent for the area is located on the road that runs due north from the town centre crossroads. This is the pick-up and drop-off point for ferry services to Kong Kong; which offers a free transfer bus to either the local He Shan ferry, or the more distant but better supported Shunde Port.
  • Town Square - this is set opposite the banks of the mighty south Pearl River and overlooks a couple of islands, one of which I used to live on. Although set out of the way, it is near the main Government buildings and a popular attraction at night and times of festivals.
  • Taxis - There are no local car taxis, although some do pass through from time to time. The main taxis are motorcycles of which the local ones are cheap and personable, whilst the ones operated by migrant workers are expensive. Clue - if they speak Cantonese then they are local and can be trusted.
  • Private Driver - We offer as part of your convenience a dedicated private driver who can be booked for short trips or for full day excursions. The drivers name is Kimi and he is 22, speaks good English, and will use one of his father's three cars. His father is our local resident contact. We will pass on his email address once any booking is confirmed.
  • Bicycles - for local and free travel we provide two bicycles for your use to tour the local roads and villages.
  • Wet Market - The main market is very large and consists of two very large open air hangars situated behind MacDonald's. The first is devoted to meat and fish, including sea fish (No bones) and shellfish delivered fresh each day from the South China Sea. The second has hundreds of vegetable stalls all offering locally grown produce at extremely cheap prices. To the side are stalls specialising in live produce, which may or may not be your thing?
  • MacDonald's - don;t they get everywhere? Well, if you really need a burger fix or coffee at 4am, then know this one is open 24/7/365 - and any taxi will understand the word "MacDonald's" (Locally "Mac Donal-zhee".
  • Local Contact - The owners of the properties are two female cousins: Vilma Castro from Costa Rica and Chen Siu Chong who lives in Jiu Jiang. The latter's husband owns two large local electrical appliance stores and is called Chen Shao Zhong. Their son is Kimi Chen mentioned above.
  • Additionally, China Expats works with all parties to ensure you have top quality assistance and a personalised vacation that is tailored to suit your needs. We can also provide private drivers and translators at very reasonable charges who have a high degree of English and understand exactly what foreigners want and expect.

Location
Holidays based in Jiu Jiang Town, Nanhai District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province, China.
Jiu Jiang Town is a quiet backwater of modern China, but notable for being close to excellent major road intersections, with the metro light-railway coming to the town in 2012.
Links to major cities like Foshan (50 minutes coach), Guangzhou (1.5 hours coach) and Hong Kong (2.1 hours ferry) mean that you are always close to very modern cities that offer a full range of amenities for foreigners.

However, the aim of this project is to allow more confident travellers and independent visitors to sample the delights of true and rural China as it is today, knowing that nearby are many assorted attractions, and several modern cities should the experience prove overwhelming - we think not knowing it will liberate your presumptuous thinking about modern China.
