Kung Fu Films
|
|
An enormous number of films have been made featuring
Kung Fu and Martial Arts. China has several dedicated
film studio's that only produce Kung Fu films, although
many of the early films were shot in Hong Kong
We highlight the leading stars and name some films that
are very worth watching, spanning about four decades
up to 2009. These will notably be 'Action' Martial Arts
films + a select few dealing with more serious and related
subjects
Virtually all films can be found on the likes of YouKu
and Ku6 (Chinese YouTube), but searching for them is
usually best done in Chinese characters. We will append
a list of links to some good stuff below, and add to
it as as and when possible
Finally, please be aware that many of these films will
be in Chinese language with both English and Chinese
subtitles. Modern films usually include a spoken English
option. Where possible we will include the language
and subtitle options available on DVD's Actor

Bruce Lee |
Cantonese Name |
Lai Siu Long 李小龙 |
|
3 decades
after his death, Bruce Lee is still considered
the Master of Kung Fu film. He was the first
to break through to Western audiences, and
he set such a high benchmark of excellence
that few have challenged him to this day.
He is China's greatest movie star. Recently
Guangzhou (Canton) TV has released a seemingly
endless serial about his early life, enhanced
by a young actor who looks and appears the

Jet Li

Lin Gie 李连杰 |
Mandarin |
Li Lian Jie |

Arguably
the first actor to truly challenge for Bruce

screen presence. Jet Li has been crowned
World Wushu Champion many times. He has
starred in about 50 Kung Fu films to date
(Mainly in Mandarin), before breaking through
to win Hollywood acclaim for supporting
roles in noteworthy movies such as: Lethal
Weapon 4.
In Chinese films he has often taken the
leading role portraying Wong Fei Hong (Huang
Fei Hong), a real person of Chinese Kung
Fu and Hung Gar history. These are readily
recognisable because of the shaved forehead
+ ponytail = a real life and deeply resented
Qing Dynasty emasculation of Chinese men
You may not be aware that he has also Produced
13 films; Written 1 (The Kiss of the Dragon),
and Directed 1 film (Zhong hua ying xiong)

Jackie
Chan |
Cantonese
Name |
Xing
Long 成龙 |
|
The
irrepressible Jackie Chan broke open the
gates Bruce Lee left ajar. His excellent
acting and Kung Fu skills are usually accompanied
by comedy routines. He performs all his
own stunts, and often gets injured. His
first Hollywood role was a bit-part in Cannonball
Run, the fight scene - which is usually
cut for some stupid reason? He has made
100's of films, which recently have included
some showing his serious acting abilities.
He also does much work for film and charity,
and has an acting school in Hong Kong

Andy Lau |
Cantonese Name |
Wha Zhi |
|
Andy Lau is Hong Kong's
most versatile artist with a career
which started in 1982. He is the only
person we are featuring in both our
Music and Film sections. Andy is not
a Kung Fu artist and should perhaps
be in our General film category? However,
some of his most notable roles have
been in Kung Fu movies - often as

Ip Man |
Cantonese Name |
Ip Man 葉問 or
叶问 |
|
Adapted from the true
life story of Ip Man - the Grand Master
of the Wing Chun style kung fu, and
sifu of legendary kung fu superstar
Bruce Lee. This movie is the first
important record of the master’s life.
Ip's persistent devotion to Wing Chun
is a classic example of the love and
respect shown to wushu and the freedom
and spirit it represents. Ip Man is
a concept, a spirit, a way of thinking
- and it exemplifies a new peak in
Hong Kong's wushu movies.
